The Engine

After much waiting, the engine (VR30DETT) finally arrived.  Vince took his time making sure we got the right engine. It is complete (pretty much), with all the piping, hoses, senses and bell housing he was looking for.

It is in a pretty dirty state, but we will be cleaning it up.  The internals, however, look spotless (from what we can see through the oil top-up inlet.  The oil on the dipstick was also looking clean.

In terms of modifications, we will be leaving it fairly standard, except for a piggy back computer, and an exhaust fitted to existing headers.

Additional modifications (inlet manifold, heads, cams and branch will be considered later.

So, next steps for this baby are:

  • Full clean
  • Remove superfluous bits and pieces
  • Sort out vacuum pipes and crossflow
  • New wiring harnesses
  • Smartronics Engine Management System
  • Benchmark VR30 in current state on dyno
  • Remove VR30
  • Adjust sump using sump from existing VR30 motor
  • Flywheel and gearbox modifications
  • Install VR30DETT
  • Benchmark VR30DETT on dyno
  • Dynatune VR30DETT with Smartronix ECU
  • Put it on the road

I am hoping this will be complete by mid-September, but let’s see.
